ABOUT ROTARYThis page contain details and photos concerning what our club has done for local charities within the aims of Rotary. Every club has different committees within it, each raising funds for different International, National and local causes.Support given in the name of the club
The club raises funds from members and the public which is in addition to the work undertaken by its internal committees,(some of the results of which are detailed below). One of its recent achievments was sending a complete room of X-ray equipment to an Albanian hospital as well as supporting RNLI, Pramacare, Life Education Centres Dorset and the Dorset Air Ambulance.
This committee dedicates its fund raising towards local charities and organisations in the Poole and surrounding area, namely Longspee School by taking them to Kids Out, as well as making donations of money and goods to Swop Chestnut Nursery, Poole Christmas Parcels Fund, Dorset Reclaim and also by donating 2 boys and 2 girls bicycles to Poole Refuge. We have great admiration for the tremendous young people of Poole who find themselves caring on a daily basis for a parent, sibling or other member of their family. We were very pleased to support a fun day out at Paulton's Park, where 40 young carers aged from 6 to 16 had a great time. We have also funded a safety boat for the Harbour Challenge to enable students to be trained by this superb scheme based in Turlin Moor. We continue to administer the annual Harbourside Walk.
In 2006 our Foundation committee held a charity dinner at which the guest speaker was Will Carnegie, the skipper of the yacht " Veritas" (black spinnaker in picture), a competitor in the BT Global challenge round the world race of 2000/01. The dinner raised the sum of £1,812 towards international disaster relief and erradication of polio throught the world (Polio Plus Campaign). This committee has, in the past, held money raising efforts such as filling Smartie tubes with 20 pences. This raised over £2,000 to further help the erradication of Polio world wide. As well as raising funds to further our links with our twinned clubs of Loches in France and Kiel-Eider in North Germany , this committee makes up Disaster/Aqua, Shelter boxes and LifeBoxes for shipment, at a moments notice, to help people in disaster stricken regions anywhere in the world. At the same time it is not only supporting the Umfundisi Project in South Africa whose aims are to educate teachers for local schools, but its main charity this year is the Wheelchair Foundation in Africa and Eastern Europe.Click here to see what the committee has achieved to date. The strength of the Rotary movement is its International brotherhood and we welcome visiting Rotarians from all over the World to the club's weekly lunch meetings.
This is the second object of Rotary - As leaders of business
within their community Rotarians should share their skills and expertise
through Vocational Service, which is one of the four avenues of service
within Rotary.
